Mom Not Sure How To Handle Teen's Anger Over Dad Wed, 13 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Q: My 13-year-old daughter's father is irresponsible, to say the least. Besides being a lousy co-parent, he frequently cancels visits and often lies about the reasons. Nonetheless, I've told her never to speak badly of him to other people. There are times when I even end up defending him, sort of. When she questions his love, I tell her that of course he loves her. When he misses a visit, I tell her that if he gave things more thought, he'd do better. I tell her to talk to him about all this stuff, and she says she can't. Sometimes her venting is rather sarcastic and ridiculing. I fear her power in relationships with males will suffer from her experience with bio-dad. Should I listen and say nothing or insist she speak respectfully of him if at all? |

Lab Notes: Synesthesia And The Sounds Of Motion Mon, 11 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 In recent years, researchers have been learning more about synesthesia, the mental condition that mixes senses — those who have it might taste certain sounds, for instance, or associate certain numbers with colors. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have for the first time found synesthetes who hear sounds when they watch certain motions. It was discovered when a student asked about the sounds that were made by dots moving across a television screen. Further investigation found that those with this form of synesthesia did better on a test of rhythmic patterns of flashes. The researchers figured that the auditory signal, in addition to the visual one, aided the group with synesthesia. The study is published in Current Biology. |

Change Is Inevitable, Improvement Is Possible Mon, 11 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 The Oxford English Dictionary dates the word "pogrom" from 1905, the year hundreds of Russian Jews were massacred in Odessa. In 1908, there was a pogrom of sorts in Illinois. It occurred in Springfield 100 years ago this week. So, consider the phenomenon of progress, which at the moment seems more contingent than it did just a decade ago. |

Immigrants Are Part Of Us Wed, 13 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Living in a globalized city means that many languages, colors and sociocultural formations abound; people brought together by global economic forces beyond their control and now closely integrated. Candidates Muff Russian Challenge Wed, 13 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 Asked in 1957 what would determine his government's course, Harold Macmillan, Britain's new prime minister, replied, "Events, dear boy, events." Now, into America's trivializing presidential campaign, a pesky event has intruded — a European war. Russian tanks, heavy artillery, strategic bombers, ballistic missiles and a naval blockade batter a European nation. We are not past such things after all. The end of history will be postponed, again. |

Learning Centers Offer Hands-On Experience Tue, 12 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 The results are in. As expected, Connecticut's first science assessment is a wake-up call. Statewide, 45 percent of our fifth-graders failed to reach the goal in grasping the foundations of science. In those school districts where so many already come up short on opportunity, the results are dismal. For the world of today and tomorrow, understanding science is basic. It is key to further education, skilled work and economic success. It is also essential to our global competitiveness and environmental stewardship. |

Warming Effects Already Starting To Snowball Mon, 11 Aug 2008 00:00:00 -0400 It's an open secret that the Warner-Lieberman bill, which was designed to launch a comprehensive national response to global warming, never really had a chance this political season. Detractors said the time was not right for a cap-and-trade regime, despite steeply rising energy costs and $4 gasoline. Even some supporters said it would make more sense to wait until after the November presidential election. |
